From there, the real testing begins.
What's the hold like?
Once my hair is styled, I expose it to three different wind levels using a calibrated wind machine.

How wet and shiny is it?

What's the scent like?
One of my favorite aspects of this product is the fragrance.
The scent is soft, slightly sweet, and has noticeable vanilla notes without becoming overpowering.
It also lasts throughout the day, which isn’t always the case with styling products.
While fragrance is naturally subjective, this is one of the better-smelling sea salt sprays I’ve used.
How crunchy is it?
After drying, the Surf Tonic leaves a slight crunchy texture.
Fortunately, that initial crunch mostly disappears after running your fingers through your hair once.
Compared to other sea salt sprays, it feels slightly crunchier than average, likely because of the product’s higher shine and wetter finish.
How malleable is it?
One of my favorite practical tests is the bike helmet test.
After completely flattening my hairstyle with a bicycle helmet, I see how easily the product allows the hair to return to its original shape.
This simulates real-world situations like wearing hats or helmets during the day.
Unfortunately, this is one of Reuzel Surf Tonic’s weaker areas.
Once the product dries, it becomes difficult to reshape. Running your fingers through your hair removes much of the original structure, and while you can recover some of the style, it never fully returns.
That’s fairly typical for sea salt sprays, which generally don’t offer the flexibility of clays or pastes.
How easy is it to reactivate with water?

If you’re expecting the hold of a clay, paste, or pomade, you’ll be disappointed. That’s simply not what this product is designed for.
Instead, it delivers exactly what most people want from a sea salt spray: natural texture, relaxed beach styling, pleasant shine, and one of the best fragrances in the category.
I also appreciate that it doesn’t try to overdo the hold. The hairstyle remains relaxed and effortless rather than stiff or overly structured.
